Replicon
Replicon is a fragment that starts from a DNA replication origin during DNA replication, and is finally completed by the replication fork started from this origin. The unit of DNA that can replicate independently is called a replicon. Each replicon is used once, and only once in each cell cycle. The replicator contains the control elements needed for replication. There is an origin at the start site of replication, and an end at the termination site of replication.
Replicon Formation-Related Proteins
Certain proteins may assist in starting from the linear end. Several linear nucleic acids have proteins covalently bound to the 5'end base. The clearest examples are Adenovirus DNA, bacteriophage Φ29 DNA and Poliovirus RNA. An example of linear end initiation is the DNA of adenovirus and bacteriophage Φ29. These DNAs indeed initiate replication at the end, and the same events can occur independently at either end. A new chain is synthesized from one end, replacing the original same chain. When the replication fork reaches the other end of the molecule, the replaced chain is released. Then it is replicated independently; this requires some short complementary sequences at the end of the molecule to form a double-stranded region.
